Sarcophagus from Cerveteri
Lake of Bracciano
Ceri
Cerveteri, Lake of Bracciano and Ceri
Going along the Via Aurelia and the highway, we arrive in the valley of CERVETERI, where about 2000 Etruscan tombs among the most famous in the world can be found. We enter the necropolis where we find the most important typologies of tombs from the IX to the II century B.C.
Later the drive takes you to lake of BRACCIANO, The town is located on the top of a large hill, Castle of Bracciano. Owned and presently occupied by the Odescalchi family. The ancient Latin name for Bracciano was Arcenum, which means fortified. It derived its name from the fact that the town was located high on top of a hill and could view the surrounding mountains and the lake and protect itself from invaders.
The Lake of Bracciano
Lake Bracciano is a volcanic lake with black, sandy shores extending over 57 square kms, with a perimeter of 33 kms. It can be completely toured by car on a panoramic road, which circles the entire lake. It is over 400 feet deep, (Jacques Cousteau failed to reach the bottom during an expedition in the 1960's!) and has two drainage points: The Annone River and the Paulus Aquaduct, feed the lake and keep the level of water constant. The lake is also fed by underwater hot springs, which help to ensure a temperature
during summer of around 70 - 80 degrees Fahrenheit.
PS; On Monday Castle and Necropolis are closed.
The tour will continues to the medieval village of CERI, settled on a tufaceous spur of volcanic origin. A crown of embattled walls, embraces its ancient houses facing the tiny central square, tightened around both the Sanctuary of the Virgin Mary and the austere Palace of the noble family Torlonia. A context of remarkable archeological, historical and naturalistic interest forms the background of this charming agricultural settlement, creating altogether a picture of rare beauty.
We find ourselves in the greatest archeological area of Europe, the home of the Etruscan civilization. Ceri is to be considered as an ideal starting point for noteworthy itineraries, starting from the castles along the seaside of Palo and Santa Severa, ending up at the fortress of Michelangelo and the harbor of Civitavecchia.
In Ceri you have a great restaurant for lunch....
Wine and Olive Oil tasting on this itinerary can be done at Cento Corvi.
