Florence and Orvieto

ORVIETO, is a picturesque hill town in Umbria that soars above the surrounding countryside characterized by vineyards and olive groves. It was a flourishing Etruscan town (ancient Volsinii) between the 7th and 3rd Century B.C. as testified by the Etruscan necropolis of the Crocifisso del Tufo. In the 11th and 12th Century the city developed to a Communal government and expanded its rule over the surrounding territory. Orvieto has preserved its medieval appearance with beautiful Romanesque and Gothic buildings, as the Duomo, a masterpiece of Italian Gothic. Orvieto is also famous for its wine, pottery and artisan shops.
