Your day starts with a visit to probably one of the best known ancient archaeological sites in the world, Pompeii. When Vesuvius popped its top in August, 79 AD, it spewed ashes in all directions, neatly burying the towns of Pompeii, Herculaneum, and several others. For more than a thousand years, the buried towns were forgotten, until the 18th century, when they were discovered. Pompeii has been almost completely excavated, a time capsule of Roman life, which kids can explore today. There is something about a ghost town that is very appealing. Pompeii has a lot to see, so take your time. See the remains of its Forum, the temples, the homes of the wealthy and the poor, the public baths, and the shops and bakeries. The ruins offer us a trip back in time and a look at the everyday life of people living in the time of Roman Empire. You may rent audio guides or book a specialist licensed guide.
Climb to the top Mt. Vesuvius, the only volcano on the European mainland to have erupted within the last hundred years, although it is not currently erupting. A road leads most of the way up, and it is not a long climb to the top (650 feet up). The trail is well maintained, but good closed-toed shoes are a must. The inside of the crater is awesome and from the top of the volcano, it feels like you are on top of the world.
Probably the best known town of the coast is Sorrento, where you will stop for lunch in a local restaurant and a stroll on its main road, Corso Italia. This is a town where lemons grow like flowers.
Your driver/guide will pick you up from the port in the morning and will take you back to the dock in the afternoon.
