The Tour

Your journey begins as your professional English-speaking driver greets you directly dockside at your cruise ship in the Port of Palermo in a premium luxury vehicle. Setting off westward across the dramatic interior valleys and rolling hills of western Sicily (~1 hour), you will travel smoothly to the ancient archaeological park of Segesta, once the political heart of the indigenous Elymian people.
Arriving at the park, step onto the wildflower-strewn hillside to behold the celebrated Temple of Segesta. Built in the late fifth century BC, this monumental Doric temple stands in breathtaking, solitary majesty against a backdrop of deep gorges and rolling countryside. Remarkably preserved with all 36 of its colossal limestone columns and classical pediments standing intact despite centuries of earthquakes, it is hailed as one of the finest surviving examples of Doric architecture in the ancient Mediterranean world. Ascend to the summit of Monte Barbaro via the park’s convenient shuttle or scenic footpath to explore the ancient Greek Theater. Carved directly into the natural slope of the mountain, the semi-circular theater seats offer a commanding, panoramic view extending across the valleys toward the turquoise waters of the Gulf of Castellammare.
Midday brings time to savor the unique culinary traditions of western Sicily. Pause at a charming countryside agriturismo nestled between Segesta and Erice, or ascend directly up the mountain to dine in a traditional village trattoria. Delight in authentic regional specialties—most famously handmade busiate alla trapanese (helical pasta tossed with a vibrant pesto of pounded garlic, sweet tomatoes, fresh basil, and toasted almonds), grilled local meats, artisanal pecorino cheese, and crisp Sicilian cannoli, accompanied by a glass of chilled Grillo or robust Nero d’Avola wine.
In the afternoon, your driver navigates the scenic switchbacks of Monte San Giuliano, climbing nearly 750 meters (2,450 feet) above sea level to the enchanting medieval town of Erice. Still encircled by ancient Elymian-Punic defensive walls, Erice feels suspended in time. Stroll along its polished, labyrinthine cobblestone alleys to the cliffside Balio Gardens and the legendary Castle of Venus (Castello di Venere). Built by the Normans atop the ancient acropolis once dedicated to the cult of Phoenician Astarte and Roman Venus, the fortress offers one of the most breathtaking panoramic viewpoints in Italy—gazing out over the historic city of Trapani, the glistening coastal salt pans, and the sun-drenched Egadi Islands floating in the Mediterranean. Conclude your walk admiring the striking fourteenth-century Gothic facade and freestanding bell tower of the Real Duomo (Royal Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta), stopping at a historic bakery to sample warm genovesi ericine—the town's celebrated sweet pastries filled with fragrant lemon custard. Following an enriching day exploring western Sicily’s greatest historical landscapes, sit back and unwind on a smooth, punctual return drive to the Port of Palermo, arriving comfortably ahead of your cruise ship’s departure.
