Lucca and Carrara
The Tour
This day is to explore the northern part of Tuscany visiting the town of Lucca and the Marble Quarries of Carrara.
After you are greeted at the port by your English speaking driver, you will make your way via the countryside to the lovely town of Lucca. The walled city is home to many beautiful churches, palaces, and piazzas The home of composer Puccini is also nearby, and open to visitors and you can admire the intact walls around the town center. You will spend portion of your moning here walking the streets of this peaceful town, see the main church, Duomo di San Martino.
Your next stop is to visit the quarries where slabs of marble are pulled from the earth, to be turned into works of art. The marble is prized for its sheen, and has been used over the centuries in many famous architectural and artistic works. Michelangelo himself was coming here in person to choose the best marble to work with and created works of art such as the David and the Pieta. You can also visit the town of Carrara which is a great representative of a Tuscan town before heading back to the port.
Note: Because of security and lack of space in the port of La Spezia, all vehicles are forbidden from entering the port.
You would need to take a shuttle to exit the port and your driver will meet you where the shuttle stops.
